Beginning his career in the independent circuit did not help Malenko earn a fortune in the business from the start but after he joined WCW, he was able to make it rain in green. He would leave WCW to join WWE where his reported salary per year was an estimated $250,000. Now, he earns a substantial amount from his managerial work at WWE.

Career and Achievements of Dean Malenko

His early gigs included several matches in Florida’s independent wrestling circuit. He and his brother were part of a tag team from 1988 to 1992. It was in Florida that he earned the Suncoast Pro Wrestling title and the ICWA Light Heavyweight title.

Malenko would then join ECW where his feud with fellow wrestler Eddie Guerrero would earn him notoriety in the wrestling circuit. In a well-documented match, Malenko would defeat Guerrero to earn his second ECW Television Championship. He also won the ECW Tag Team Championship with Chris Benoit, both of whom were part of the Triple Threat alongside Shane Douglas.

In September 1995, Benoit and Malenko joined World Championship Wrestling (or, WCW) where Malenko would be nicknamed “The Iceman” for his villainous persona. At WCW, Maleno would win 3 titles- the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship, the WCW World Tag Team Championship, and the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. He won the latter for 4 times bringing his total number of title wins to an astounding 6. 

Malenko’s apparent departure from WCW led to a contract signing with WWF although he would retire soon due to various issues. He still managed to win WWF Light Heavyweight Championship twice in a row.

Despite retiring from the sports, Malenko has since made numerous guest appearances in sporadically occurring matches. He was inducted into 2300 Arena Hardcore Hall Of Fame. He has also been cited by various wrestlers as a prime inspiration.

Personal Life

Dean Malenko was born as Dean Simon into a wrestling family. His father, Boris Malenko, was a prominent wrestling figure and his older brother, Joe, was also a professional wrestler. His other ring names include Dean Sarcoff and Ciclope.

Malenko suffered from a heart attack in the latter half of 2010. This led him to reconsider his life choices but he soon returned to fulfill his producing job at WWE for the Survival Series. He has since experienced chest pains on a regular basis but most prominently in November 2013 which led him to be hospitalized for a few days.
