Peter was born in West Germany on 11 October 1967 to Susanne and Klaus Friedrich Thiel. He moved to the United States with his parents when he was just one year old. He graduated from Stanford Law School. Thiel also worked as a securities lawyer for Sullivan & Cromwell in New York. His life changed when his friend introduced him to cryptography-related company ideas, which became his first venture later becoming popular as Confinity in 1998.

After that, he launched Paypal in the year 1999. Paypal went public in 2002 at that time Thiel was the CEO at that time holding a 3.7% stake in the company.
